Volunteer at Interdependence 2012
Letter from Independence 2012
May 15 - 17, 2012 (dates chaged)
Vancouver Convention Centre
Vancouver, BC, Canada
Interdependence 2012 (i2012) is a conference and expo hosted by the Rick Hansen
Foundation (RHF) and the Rick Hansen Institute. Since his Man In Motion World Tour 25
years ago, Rick Hansen has nurtured a dream of true collaboration across the field of SCIrelated
research and care. That dream began to be realized in 2003 when RHF established
the SCI Solutions Network through generous public funding and private donations. The
Network has since been named the Rick Hansen Institute (RHI) and now operates as an
independent charitable organization committed to accelerating the translation of worldwide
SCI research into a cure for paralysis after spinal cord injury. Please visit
www.rickhansen.com and www.rickhanseninstitute.org for more information about these
organizations.
Interdependence 2012 (i2012) will be a great time and an exciting opportunity for people
interested in Spinal Cord Injury Research and Development. To make the Conference a great success we depend on local assistance from approximately 50 volunteers with good English language skills.
Volunteering is a great learning experience, and an opportunity to network and acquire
insight into the operation of a large scale Conference.
Volunteers for Interdependence 2012 are the first contact for many of the attendees. Their
critical role is to welcome foreign participants and to foster a spirit of helpfulness and
hospitality.
In return for volunteer services, the i2012 gladly offers the following benefits:
- complimentary food & beverage during volunteer shifts
- a Certificate of Participation
- Conference registration (for a minimum of three shifts worked)
The following volunteer positions are available during i2012:
- Conference Bag preparation
- Registration & Information Desk Representative
(register participants for the Conference, distribute Conference kits, etc.)
- Greeter for Sessions
(ensure the smooth running of the session, assisting the speaker where required)
- Greeter for Social Events
(assist together with i2012 staff whenever help is needed)
- Poster Session Representative
(assist the presenters with setup/dismantle of their posters)
- Accessibility Representative
(assist delegates with disabilities)
- Speaker, VIP & Media Attendant
(assist speakers, VIPs or Media where required)
Successful volunteer applicants will be required to participate in a mandatory accessibility
workshop at the Blusson Spinal Cord Centre (818 West 10th Ave, Vancouver, BC) on one of
the following dates:
- Tuesday, April 17, 2012 6-8pm
- Sunday, April 22, 2012 1-3pm
All volunteers will also be required to participate in an on-site training session before the
start of the Conference to ensure all volunteers are confident with the facility and their
important role in the success of i2012. The on-site training will take place Sunday, May 13,
2012, at 1:00pm.
All volunteers will receive a volunteer manual via email. The volunteer manual will outline all
of the responsibilities associated with the assigned role(s) and scheduled volunteer shift(s)
during the Conference. Positions will be assigned based on qualification.
We would welcome any volunteer recommendations, or if your organization is willing to
publish our volunteer recruitment information on a billboard, or through email.
