Charlottetown, PEI – The Variety Village Rebels captured the championship crown at the 2012 Canadian Wheelchair Basketball League Open Finals in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island on Sunday.

The Rebels secured the national title with a 93-58 victory over the Gladiateurs de Laval in the gold medal game, taking home the championship for the second consecutive year.

The Saint John Mavericks club was victorious 68-60 in the bronze medal match, defeating the Bulldogs de Quebec.

The championship game saw the tournament’s top two offensive powerhouses clash in a physical contest. Variety Village set the tone early and steadily built up momentum. The Rebels converted on their scoring opportunities and stifled the Laval offence, which had averaged 73.0 points per game through its first four matches.

“We had to be unselfish today and we had to help each other out and play as one unit, as a team of five on the court,” said Rebels Head Coach Steve Bialowas. “If we did that good things were going to happen and they did. We played very well.”

The medal games concluded three days of fiery wheelchair basketball competition in which eight of Canada’s elite club teams showcased their speed, skill and athleticism.

Quebec’s Maxime Poulin was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, while Variety Village Rebels Mor Peretz and Dayton Sopha, Douglas College Royal Matt Gee, Saint John Maverick Bill Hill, and PEI Mustang Clary Stubbert were named to the tournament all-star team.
