BCWBS To Host 2014 Women's Wheelchair Basketball National Championships

(Vancouver, BC) – BC Wheelchair Basketball Society is proud to announce that it will be hosting the 2014 Women’s Wheelchair Basketball National Championships from April 25-27. This is the first time in the sport’s history that the women’s wheelchair basketball national championship has been held independently of the men’s event.
“We’re so proud to be hosting this inaugural event that will celebrate and promote women in sport,” said BCWBS Interim Managing Director Sian Blyth. “B.C. has a long history of women’s wheelchair basketball excellence – from legendary women’s team coach Tim Frick to Paralympic legend Marni Abbott-Peter – and we can’t wait to inspire the next generation of female athletes.”
The event will be held at the Richmond Olympic Oval, which has been a strong partner of the para-sport community since it hosted the World Wheelchair Rugby Championships in 2010. Last year, the Richmond Olympic Oval was home to the 2012 National Wheelchair Basketball Championship and 2012 CWBL Women’s Championship and tournament organizers look forward to continuing the partnership.
“The Richmond Olympic Oval is a world-class venue and will provide the perfect backdrop for some truly world-class basketball,” said Blyth.
BCWBS hopes that fans of the game will help to cheer on the BC Breakers women’s team to its third gold medal in five years. The team, which features Paralympic star Janet McLachlan, last won the CWBL Women’s Championship in front of a hometown crowd when the tournament was last hosted at the Richmond Olympic Oval in 2012.
