New And Experienced Had A Blast At The 2nd All-Comers Festival
All-Comers Wheelchair Basketball Festival was held last Saturday, November 5th.
18 individuals, from new to experienced, came out to Douglas College and shared a fun time playing our sport.
The day began with some chair fittings and introductions.
Everyone seemed fairly comfortable meeting with new people and trying out sport wheelchairs thanks to welcoming coaches, Arley, Anthony (AP), and Nathan.
Arley’s first skill drill “Dance Party” was a big hit and got them ready for the Game #1.
With some advice and encouragement from the coaches and experienced players, the game brought some excitements and lots of smiles out of all the participants.
The second skill session was divided into two skill levels. Nathan introduced some basic yet important skills to new/newer players and Arley and AP taught some advanced skills to the other group.
Game #2 & #3 got a little more competitive but there are lots of laughs and smiles as well.
While the participants enjoying some snacks, some prizes were given out to those who were able to answer some trivia questions on our coaches/refs/players.
Does everyone know how many countries AP has been to playing with Team Canada? Does everyone know which Paralympics Arley competed in? How many years has Dean been refereeing wheelchair basketball??
If you don’t know the answers, make sure to come out next time and talk to the coaches/refs!
Our head official Dean held a referee clinic during the event and we welcomed three new officials to support our sport! Without our officials, we wouldn’t be able to have an event like this or any tournaments, so big thanks to Dean and all BCWBS officials!!
Thanks again to all who came to the event and all the coaches.
Thanks to Bridging the Gap program (BTG) and Holly for co-hosting this event.
We are planning to have another festival in spring so stay tuned!
