Here is a report on our "Breakfast Club" by BCWBS athlete Amanda Yan.

**********

Between 6:30 and 7am, my 5 alarms go off at 6:30, 6:40, 6:45, 6:50 and 7:00. After my final alarm on my cordless phone goes off at 7:10, I finally roll out of bed. After getting washed up, I grab my ultra healthy bran cereal and a banana to start off my most important meal of the day. Then after breakfast, I quickly get dressed and zip off to Douglas by 7:20.

When you step into an empty gym in the morning and see the basketball hoops sitting pretty in it's natural state, you can't help but feel excited for the potential awesomeness that can happen within the next hour and half.

As practice gets under way, we push till our hands give out and we strive for perfection as the beads of sweat roll down our foreheads. We roll down the court like nobody's business, we shoot for a layup and at that exact moment, everything slows down to break neck snail speed, you take a quick glimpse up as you fly by, only to see that sweet orangey blur brush past down through that pearly white gate of success. It's that exact moment, when it hits you…this is why you dragged yourself out of bed at the crack of dawn when so many other beds in the province are still warm and undisturbed. Development, ameliorate, advancement, growth, take your pick of verb, all we push for is overall improvement (no pun intended).
Nothing starts off my day better than a good hard and shveaty morning practice. By joining our morning practices or ‘Breakfast Club’ as we like to call it, we will introduce you to a whole other dimension of what it really means to be a real athlete. And Breakfast Club isn’t just called that for nothing you know. Yeah, we like to breakfast it up on occasion.

We strive for that perfect foul shot, perfect layup or that perfect pick in a game. I’ve seen a few perfects within my four short months here at Douglas since playing this crazy awesome game. And let me tell you, it doesn’t take a veteran to tell you that it all starts with those morning practices. Like Joe says, “this is how the pros do it”.

No excuses, no “I’m not a morning person” or “I can’t wake up”, we’ll have none of that. Those who want to do, do. And the others well, what others?

There's a difference between interest and commitment. When you're interested in doing something, you do it only when circumstance permit. When you're committed to something, you accept no excuses, only results.

So we’ll see you on Wednesday and Friday at 8 am sharp.
